GW2D May 2011: Genetic Hybrid

The topic for this month's Gnomon Workshop 2D Image Challenge is Genetic Hybrid.

There are a number of things I wish I had. A flatbed scanner and a Cintiq would be nice right about now. I've spent two days so far thinking about concepts, sketching, and doing research for this month's 2D competition. I need to quicken the pace, though.

The genetic hybrid I've come to settle in on is a cross between the domestic cat and the red eyed tree frog. To accomplish this I've been studying the skeletal and muscle structures of the two forms in order to render a believable convergence of genetic traits. That's not to say there's no room for creativity, though. My girlfriend pointed out that hybridized animals tend to consist only partly of expected characteristics. The rest may be quite unexpected. A liger for instance, born of a male lion and a female tiger, lacks the gene to limit growth. Adult ligers are therefore significantly larger than both contributing species, tending toward gigantism.
